Bowery Poetry’s founder Bob Holman was the first person to bring Slam to NYC and popularize it, creating and hosting a Friday night slam at Nuyorican Poets Cafe for an entire decade.

Now, we’ve spent months honing in on some of the sharpest spoken word talents in the city. We are building the newest slam team in New York City, and they will have the honor of representing us at the National Poetry Slam in Decatur, Georgia this August.

Not only are we reviving an epic cultural sport in the creative heart of New York City, but we’re also filming a full-length documentary to record how it all unfolds. The energy, the challenges, the conflict, the love, and the new expressions and power that these poets are already discovering within themselves and each other.

Poetic powerhouse Ashley August (she herself an actress, playwright, touring spoken word artist, multiple time Grand Slam Champ, hip-hop junkie, professional shower krumper and NYC's 2013 Youth Poet Laureate) hosts the Bowery Slam every week. Poets pour out something new every time, and five judges determine who will advance. With 10 finalists in the running down from hundreds who have tried out, the stakes are high.

Bowery Slam has its home at Bowery Poetry, and is generously supported by the Radio Drama Network.
